Route between volcanoes, The Camino de Santiago in Gran Canaria

The Camino de Santiago of Gran canaria is the route which unites the south of the island with the Templo Matriz de Santiago de los Caballero in the northwest of Gran Canaria
This last one. Belongs to the Church of Santiago Apóstol, the oldest from the island built up in 1486, is the first and the oldest pilgrim headquarter out from the european continental land, founded since 1482, before the end of the conquering of the island.

This route not only unifies the two pilgrim temples from Gran Canaria (Church of Bartolomé in Tunte and Santiago de Los Caballeros, in Gáldar) it recreates from Oasis of Maspalomas the route that the galician walked, according to the tradition, in the beginning of the XV century carrying with them the religious image of Santiago “el chico” to build up a church, nowadays disappeared, in the high points from Tirajana. They offer this image to thank them for surviving during the storms in the ocean.
Plenty of the paths and trails where this route is located were used by the ancient canary inhabitants in the communication channels from then which unifies the north and the south of the island and subsequently, this paths were used to transhumance and the location of traditional canary celebrations (Camino de la Plata).
This route propose a trip to the heart of the island, valuing the landscape, vegetation, fauna, gastronomy, historic and ethnographic heritage and the valuable island net of paths and trails where you would meet the true essence of the island, a long-path journey which cross the island from south to north and through the mountains of Gran Canaria.
The trial starts in the south of the island, in Maspalomas’ dunes and it dives into the center of Gran Canaria through the Caldera of Tirajana and then, reaching Caldera de Tejeda until go down to the lands of grazing and agriculture in the north, where you’ll meet the youngest volcanoes. As a reference to the end of the path, it emerges another volcanic cone, Montaña de Gáldar, visible from the médium highs and alongside the north coastline, the many locations of this route set up a proper “Route between Volcanoes”.
Walking this route may you discover and admire many hidden values from Gran Canaria, like the Lighthouse and Oasis of Maspalomas, the Muchos Puentes, A través de esta ruta se pueden admirar muchos de los valores que oculta Gran Canaria, como el Faro y Oasis de Maspalomas, the Fataga Ravine, Artenara’s Necropolis, villages of Fataga and Tunte, Degollada de Cruz Grande, Paso de la Plata, Ventana del Nublo, Llanos de la Pez, Degollada de Becerra and Cruz de Tejeda and the tourist destiny starlight, Degollada de las Palomas, Cruz de los Moriscos, Pinos de Gáldar, the transhumance farming and the designation of origin of Queso de Flor and the Museum and Arqueological Park Cueva Pintada and the Historic Center of Gáldar.
