Underground and Cosmopolitan, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, an alternative and friendly city

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a modern city where the alternative has evolved into the mainstream way of living, a luxury and a daily work we must continue day to day.

Our capital is the most Cosmopolitan city in the Canary Islands and one of the best weather cities in the Tropic of Cancer due to the Trade Winds of our region. The result is an average temperature of 22º C all over the year. Our fortunate geographical location made us the European Capital of the Middle Atlantic Ocean and a cultural and economic bridge between Europe, Africa and America.

Due to these facts, we talk about the business and cultural projects which keep our capital city being different, a Paradise located in the South of Europe.

Travel with us and dive into the world of cultural associations, sotres, businesses, artists or pubs, where the exchange of ideas develops an alternative and underground culture of the city.

A living city is waiting for us…

Prepare your minds and keep your eyes open to spend a cultural week in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria! We start in Talleres Palermo, C/ República Dominicana 18, a multispace which has evolved in time, adjusting their services to the city. They started as a furniture restoration place and the change into one of the most influential cultural places of the city, live concerts, flea markets, bar, coworking, urban gardens and a store where you can buy anything in the place; chairs, tables, paintings… They are planning to prepare the location for being a live music and theatre bar.

We follow our way and we make a stop in Asociación Cultural Plataforma 3 located on a rooftop not too far from Santa Catalina’s Park. They have been open since april 2019 trying to be a reference of culture in the city. They bet for giving visibility to little events and original purposes from canary and foreigners artists. A place for the production and creation of artistic projects, meetings, flea markets, cinematographic projections, etc.

In Calle Valencia 37 you can find MT Art Space, a studio and residence of the artist Moreno-Tapia and the manager Jose Moreno which opens their gates to participate and to collaborate in many activities related with art and culture. Their flea markets and workshops are highly recommended.

And in front of this studio, in the number 32, a small and newly inaugurated place, Cero Fanzine, is located, where Toni Lemus preserves a private collection of fanzines of more than 700 pieces from many different parts of the world. They also make workshops and fanzine presentations. Their first event will be the next 7th of may.

Then, we go directly to exchange used books in the lowcost library Re-Read in Bernardo de la Torre, 33. In this small space you can find second-hand books in good conditions, they tell us: “there is always books read and books to be read”

In the late afternoon and knowing we are collectionist a little bit “freak”, we cannot avoid going to a specialised store of music and cinema Regreso al Pasado, located in C/Churruca 33. Is one of the meeting points for fans of classic cinema and good music. You can find posters, cds. Vinyls, films, merchandising and a lot more… A tempting place, isn’t it?

We remember there’s a place where to get cool with style, we trust the marvellous cocktails from El Mono Malvado, located in Plaza Farray 2 in Guanarteme, a “must”. The project which is being held by Alberto Beraldo is spectacular, it offers something completely different. He works a huge list of cocktails, always shared with vintage music and a “impossible decoration”, that we love.
